2011 Hurricane Season Officially Begins This Week; Expected to Be Above Normal

NEW YORK, May 31, 2011 —
An above-normal hurricane season is expected this year, according to the seasonal issued by , a division of the . NOAA is predicting that there will 12 to 18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher); of which six to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher); including three to six major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher).

Reporters covering the insurance implications of the hurricane season are encouraged to contact the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Information Institute (I.I.I.).

Wind damage from hurricanes is covered under standard homeowners, renters and business insurance policies, but may be subject to a percentage-based windstorm deductible. Damage to cars from wind is covered under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy.
Ìý
Flood damage is excluded under most standard homeowners, renters and business insurance policies. Flood insurance is available through the federal government’s National Flood ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Program (), and from a few private insurers. There is typically a 30-day waiting period before a flood insurance policy goes into effect. The optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy includes coverage for flood damage.
