The I.I.I. has online resources and insurance experts who can answer your questions and provide media interviews about why flood-caused damage to a home, condo/co-op or rental apartment is generally not covered under a standard homeowners or renters insurance policy but only through policies issued by the federal government’s National Flood ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Program (NFIP) and a few private carriers.

You must live in a community that participates in the NFIP to qualify for an NFIP policy. , or to assess the approximate cost of a flood insurance policy in your neighborhood, access .

Besides flood insurance, consumers may also need water back-up coverage, which covers water-caused damage to their property related to sewers, drains and sump pumps. Water back-up coverage can usually be added as an endorsement to a homeowners, condominium, co-op or renters policy for an annual premium of $50, for $10,000 of coverage.
